Never Again

This child was there when it all happened, they saw it all unravel, they witnessed all the bloodshed, they saw the million in the Holocaust, the thousands in Sabra and Shatila, the thousands in Burma and they always said the same thing every time, “Never again.” They never stopped echoing it, they witnessed the gore, the inhumanity and they would weep, wondering when their time would come. They would lose all hope, this child would never see the sun shine anymore, the birds don’t chirp the same for them anymore they have had their hope for humanity dismembered. They still prayed though, they would go in the darkest nights and pray for justice to prevail, for their knight in shining armor to swoop them out of all this terror. This child has seen more darkness than light that this life offered, and they slowly receded away from this world they wanted no part of. This is the child that wore stripped pajamas, this is the child that saw his brother shot in front of them, this is the child that had his family murdered because of their color, or their ethnicity, this is the child that had no childhood. This is the child that lost it all because of selfish desires of imperialistic heartless leaders, the child that had to grow up before he even reached puberty. This is the child that lived through it all, the one who walked away and said, “Never again will it happen again,” this is the child that tried to move on from the scars so deep that this world caused but had it reopened time and time again. They’ve grown weary of this world, the empty promises, the lack of effort to help those in need. This is the child that lived through genocide and vouched to never let it happen again but can’t do anything for those in pain now, those being slaughtered now. This is the child who grew up and weeps for those who go through undeserved sorrow because he cannot do anything. This is the child who thought his forefathers stop this genocide but witnessed his parents shot, this child bellows, “I thought it’ll never happen again,” as he now watches those from Syria left to fend for themselves.
